Iraq war veteran and Congressman-elect Tammy Duckworth says it's important to remember and appreciate those who've served in wars on Veterans Day and beyond.

In a statement on Sunday, she says it is "essential" to honor those who have been willing to make the defense of freedom their personal responsibility.

The Democrat was recently elected to the U.S. House over first-term Republican Congressman Joe Walsh. The contest in Chicago's suburbs was closely watched nationwide.

Duckworth has worked for both federal and state veterans affairs departments. She lost both legs and severely damaged her arm in Iraq while serving as an Army helicopter pilot.
