Daley Says Thanks During Open House

Mayor Richard Daley said thank you to hundreds of Chicagoans. Monday he invited well wishers to an open house at City Hall to do it personally.

Many took him up on the offer.

Hundreds lined up Monday to the sounds of bagpipes from Shannon Rovers in the City Hall lobby.

"He's an excellent, excellent mayor," said one well wisher. "We all love him."

A separate line started at 8 a.m. filled with those who received invitations from Daley's office to show up early.

The shorter line included people Daley worked with in the past, including Chicago Blackhawks President John McDonough, newly elected state Treasurer Dan Rutherford and Rick Garcia, founder and former political director of Equality Illinois. They unsurprisingly had well wishes and smiles for Chicago's longest serving mayor.

Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel will be sworn in May 16.
