Chicago Cop to Replace Derrick Smith

Eddie Winters to hold office until January

West Side Democrats have picked a replacement for ousted state Rep. Derrick Smith.

Chicago police officer Eddie Winters will hold the office until January, when the winner of the November election is sworn in.

Last week, the Illinois House voted 100-6 to expel Smith from the legislature following his indictment earlier this year for allegedly accepting a $7,000 bribe in an FBI sting. Investigators say the money was in exchange for promising to steer a state grant to a daycare center.

Smith remains on the ballot and intends to run in November. He'll be up against Lance Tyson, a third-party candidate.
