Chicago Celebrates Pulaski Day

Polish-born hero was a cavalry officer who died in battle in Georgia during 1779

Illinois celebrated the life of Revolutionary War hero Casimir Pulaski on Monday.

The Polish-born hero was a cavalry officer who died in battle in Georgia during 1779.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel was among many state and local officials to attend the Annual Pulaski Day ceremony at the Polish American Museum.

During his brief remark, Emanuel spoke about the importance of the Polish community to the history of Chicago.

"The connection between the roots of Polish Americans here in the city of Chicago, and the history of the city of Chicago are intertwined and they are one," Emanuel said.

In honor of Pulaski Day, all Chicago public libraries were closed, as well as Chicago and Cook County government offices.
