The Race: Republican Party Candidate for Illinois State Senate in the 18th District

The Competition: Bill Cunningham

The Buzz: Bellar, a licensed attorney and licensed family practice physician, is a former nun and Army Reserves major as well as a faculty member at DePaul University and Benedictine University. She said she wants a “clean slate” for Illinois.

Bellar ran for House of Representatives in 2010 and lost. According to her website, Bellar promotes ethics reform in government and wants Illinois to help encourage small businesses and create a balanced budget. Pointing to her degree in Bioethics and Health Policy and service in the U.S. Army reserve, Bellar says she will serve with distinction and integrity. Bellar has previously been a Benedictine Nun, and says she is pro-life, pro-family and supports the Second Amendment.
