Greg Grunberg Did His Sexaholic Research for “Group Sex”

"Heroes" star Greg Grunberg was not going to go unprepared when writing and starring in his new movie about sexaholics, "Group Sex." The star made sure he attended Sexaholics Anonymous meetings to understand the characters he was going to be writing about.

Fortunately his research for the movie, now out on DVD, came before he became a very recognizable face in Hollywood.

"That would have been a TMZ dream to find me in those meetings today," he tells PopcornBiz. "The good news is we actually wrote this script years ago."

While the group therapy is serious stuff, Grunberg and his writing partner Lawrence Trilling did find plenty of material worthy of what he calls "a romantic comedy set in world of a sexaholic recovery group." The film stars Tom Arnold, Josh Cooke, Jamie Denton and Henry Winkler and Odette Yustman.

"There are two vices that people can laugh at and they are obesity and sex," he says, adding he "fights the eating addiction all the time."

While attending the six group meetings before writing the script, Grunberg did his best to keep to himself and didn't participate. Although he did simply introduce himself as "Greg" in a few meetings.

"I just said my name and passed," he said. "I couldn't lie and say I was a sex addict."

But even keeping as low-key as possible there were still some uncomfortable moments.

Grunberg recalls: "So there was this one meeting where the guy next to me said, 'I'm just so happy to be in this room, with people who truly understand what we're going through. Because I hate the way this is depicted in tv and film,' "

"And I was like, 'Oh my God, I'm doing research!' "
