“The Thing” of It Is, There's a New Trailer Out

Hot on the heels of the poster that dropped this week comes the long overdue trailer for "The Thing," and we have to say we're pleasantly surprised by what we see.

The new new "Thing" is a prequel to the 1982 John Carpenter classic of the same title, which itself was a remake of a somewhat low-budget '50s thriller about a group of scientists who discover a spaceship buried beneath the ice of Antarctica.

This year's model stars Joel Edgerton and Mary Elizabeth Winstead and was directed Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. This production was beset by all manner of delays, which naturally has tempered the significant buzz that once surrounded the film.

Heijningen has done a great job of recreating the ominous tone and vibe of Carpenter's film--seeing that dog start to whine gave us chills all over again, and Winstead appears to bring the goods. We are a bit surprised, however, that Edgerton is almost completely silent throughout--we have to assume his part is much larger than this clip indicates.

"The Thing" opens Oct. 14, 2011.
