The Real-Life Perils of the Onscreen “Housewives” Soup Fight

Onscreen fighting can be a be a brutal business. Just ask "Desperate Housewives" star and soup battler Helena Mattsson.

Mattsson got more than she bargained for when she threw borscht on her onscreen prospective mother-in-law (Felicity Huffman).

"I threw the soup on her and of course it covered the floor behind her," Mattsson tells PopcornBiz. "I was supposed to pass her and walk behind her. But I slipped on the borscht and fell on my a--."

While the unglamorous fall for an onscreen Russian ice-queen was very out-of-character and unscripted, Huffman didn't miss a beat. Playing a very suspicious mother-in-law, she made the best of the moment and stayed in character.

"Karma's a bitch." Huffman said as a shocked Mattsson sprawled on the floor. Sounds like cat-fight heaven. But that take of the borscht fight did not make it into the episode.

"It was a bummer they didn't use that take," she says. While she was sore: "It was hilarious."

Mattsson did the scene again walking coldly past the table without a spill. Another bummer, Mattsson's character was killed off by the Wisteria Lane serial killer.
