I swear that I had no clue about the existence of "The Devil Inside" until I looked at the box office chart this morning. I think that's probably because I'm an old person, or perhaps because the film was shrewdly marketed to young audiences, and the studio made no attempt to appeal to old people who are totally out of it. Either way, I'm old and lame. Here's a little movie that cost nothing and just blew apart the box office over the weekend. That sounds like a recipe for success in our dopey little PBCS formula. First, let's look at the final box office chart via Box Office Mojo.

1. The Devil Inside - $34.5M
2. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - $20.5M
3. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - $14.1M
4. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo - $11.3M
5. Alvin & the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked - $9.5M
6. War Horse - $8.6M
7. We Bought A Zoo - $8.5M
8. Tintin - $6.6M
9. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy $5.8M
10. New Year's Eve - $3.3M

"Devil Inside" made back its budget 34 times over this weekend. LOOK AT IT GO, LOOK AT IT KICK... That's just the kind of box office sorcery needed to take down the unstoppable force that is George Clooney. BEHOLD!

1. The Devil Inside - 839
2. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - 753
3. The Artist - 292
4. The Descendants - 275
5. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - 242
6. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo - 86
7. War Horse - 67
8. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - 52
9. We Bought A Zoo - 51
9. Young Adult (tie) - 51

"Devil Inside" got some of the year's worst reviews, but I'm heartened to see that critical adoration isn't the overriding factor in these little rankings. Clooney maintained his death grip over our formula for too long with his emotive Hawaiian antics. Time for a good old fashioned terrible horror movie with no budget to remind people that bad movies deserve a chance too! Elsewhere, you see that "MI:4" is still going strong. and will end up being Tom Cruise's biggest movie in years, perhaps ever. And both "TTSS" and "The Artist" are riding the awards-season wave to big numbers. Be on the lookout for "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close", which is in limited release and could crack our top 10 if people decide that twee 9/11 movies are, like, a thing now. I'm too old to know.
