Peter Jackson is trying his darnedest to land one of the original "Office" workers for the lead role in "The Hobbit."

Martin Freeman, Tim on the BBC version of "The Office," recently had to turn down an offer from Jackson to play Bilbo Baggins in the long planned two-part film "The Hobbit," reported The Sun. Martin had previously committed to another season of playing Dr. Watson on the BBC series "Sherlock."

Now comes word that Jackson wants Freeman so badly that he and his people have tried to plan a shooting schedule that would allow Freeman to do both projects, according to Entertainment Weekly.

We're big fans of Freeman, who in addition to "The Office," starred in the overlooked "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and has given nice -- if smaller -- turns in both "Hot Fuzz" and "Shaun of the Dead."

He's a great choice for Baggins, possessing perhaps the most important quality the role calls for: a stammering but unwavering English-ness.

Let's hope this deal gets worked out so we can all obsess over something else.
