James Franco's "Apes" Movie Gets Its Fourth Title

Honestly, how hard is it to name a “Planet of the Apes” movie?

James Franco stars as scientist Will Rodman in the next “Apes” film, which is out Aug. 5, and has just received its fourth—and presumably last—title, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.”

The script's original title was “Caesar,” a reference to Roddy McDowell’s character in the ’72 and ’73 films, now being played by Andy Serkis. But any reasonable person would think the film was about Rome or salad.

So 20th Century Fox changed it to “Caesar: Rise of the Apes,” which was better, but only hardcore fans would’ve been able to connect the dots. So they dropped the “Caesar,” and went with “Rise of the Apes. Great—put it on a poster!

But, no… Apparently some research has indicated that Americans are too stupid to realize that “Rise of the Apes” is part of the “Planet of the Apes” franchise, so they’ve changed it yet again.

Leave it to Hollywood to make the simple thing complicated.
