Eastwood Directing Hoover Biopic Would Not Be a Drag

Clint Eastwood, actor, film director, Oakland.

Clint Eastwood is angling to direct a new J. Edgar Hoover biopic from Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-nominated writer of "Milk."

Hoover is, for those of you who can't read and don't own a TV, one of the great -- ahem -- characters of 20th Century America. An overzealous bulldog in the fight against communism with little regard for the Constitution, a suspected homosexual cross-dresser, who spent much of the '50s and '60s going after Martin Luther King Jr. instead of, say, criminals.

It's a reasonably safe bet that Black, an openly gay man, won't shy away from rumors about Hoover's bedroom recreations. It will be interesting to see if Eastwood's involvement insulates the project from Hoover sympathizers.

In a nice turn of history, Eastwood's Malpaso production company is set up at Warner Bros., where Hoover served as a consultant on the 1959 movie "The FBI Story" and on the film's ABC spinoff series "The F.B.I.," noted The Hollywood Reporter.
