Open House: Rooftop Gardens

Landscape architect Sam Lawrence, who designed the verdant, eleventh-floor oasis at Jersey City glass tower 77 Hudson, explains how to create your own urban garden in the sky. First, find out how much weight the area can support, says Sam. You should also consider the amount of wind and sun the garden will receive, what views you'd like to highlight and if you'd like to change the layout with different plants.

Bring Interior Design to Outdoor Spaces

Thanks to a slew of chic weather-resistant fabrics, furnishings and materials, al fresco areas can be just as stylish as indoor ones and even blend seamlessly with interiors. Take this outdoor haven by Barb Ince of Susan Fredman Design Group. Interior designer and HGTV host Frank Fontana gets a tour of the space, which includes a large kitchen complete with a stove, refrigerator and honed granite counters. Nearby, the dining area provides a sleek complement to the formal dining room with sleek teak furniture that's also mildew-proof.

When real estate blog Curbed launched its national edition, it sent dollhouses to six home magazines, including Elle Decor, House Beautiful and Architectural Digest. HGTV also whipped up a wee space with this tiny garden, which was inspired by Jamie Durie, a landscape designer and host of the cable network's "The Outdoor Room." We can't get enough of the pint-sized cactus, water lillies, pillows, throw and pebbles, which are fashioned from crushed bird seed. View more pictures of the dollhouse garden on Curbed National.
