In pop culture, there are few people who are as associated with patriotism and flag-waving as Comedy Central anchor Stephen Colbert. On his show “The Colbert Report,” Colbert routinely puts people “on notice,” has a Captain America shield hanging on his wall and talks about the menace to society known as bears (sorry Jay Cutler).
On Thursday night, Colbert will showcase his love for America once again when he welcomes Chicago Blackhawks National Anthem singer Jim Cornelison onto the program. The show will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and Cornelison will sing for a national television audience.
Colbert also will welcome author Lonn Taylor onto the show, who will be discussing his new book “The Star-Spangled Banner: The Making of an American Icon."
This won’t be Cornelison’s first brush with national fame. On the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Cornelison sang the National Anthem at Soldier Field before the Bears took on the Atlanta Falcons:
If you miss Cornelison’s appearance on "The Colbert Report," fear not. Not only will he also be singing at the NASCAR Sprint Cup race in Chicago on Sept. 14, but he also will be making his United Center debut for the season at the Blackhawks’ Training Camp Festival on Sept. 22.
