(WHEELING) Crews called off their search Saturday night for a Prospect Heights man who fell into the Des Plaines River near north suburban Wheeling after attending a nearby picnic. The recovery effort will continue in the morning.
About 5:30 p.m., two men were walking along the Des Plaines River near Hintz Road and Milwaukee Avenue in Wheeling when one of the men apparently fell in, according to Cook County Forest Preserve District spokesman Steve Mayberry.
Gavino Alvarez-Diego, 34 or 35, had been at a picnic nearby prior to the incident, Mayberry said.
A number of witnesses on the scene also saw Alvarez-Diego go into the water and "pop up" at one point, but there was no sign of him as of 7 p.m., Mayberry said.
