School Nurse Admits to Sex With Teens

A Bolingbrook elementary school nurse could potentially spend three to seven years in prison after admitting to sexual contact and relations with a minor in 2006, authorities said.

Laura J. Obzera, 50, of the 800 block of Bonnie Brae in Bolingbrook, was charged with three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse in September. She allegedly had sexual relations with three teenage boys throughout the year of 2006.

Obzera worked as a health assistant at Wood View Elementary School at 197 Winston Dr. in Bolingbrook. Sentencing is set for Sept. 29 after she pleaded guilty without any attached conditions Friday in Will County Circuit Court to a charge of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, court records show.

Obzera’s offense is a Class 2 felony and carries up to seven years in jail with the option of probation, spokesman for the state’s attorney’s office Charles Pelkie told the Chicago Breaking News Center.

Another consequence for Obzera’s offense is her required, lifelong registration as a sex offender.

Bolingbrook police began investigating Obzera in September 2008 after the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services contacted the police about “inappropriate text messages of a sexual nature” being sent between three teenaged boys and an adult.

DCFS and the Bolingbrook police teamed up to identify the adult as Obzera, Bolingbrook police Cmdr. Tom Ross said last year.

Obzera was charged with three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, one for each teenager involved, but two of the charges were dropped in exchange for her guilty plea.

The boys involved ranged in age from 13 to 17. Police do not believe that any criminal behavior took place on school property or that Obzera met the boys through her work, Ross said, but the investigation did not reveal these details.

Obzera had been a licensed practical nurse since 1982, but was placed on administrative leave from her job following her arrest.

Obzera is currently free on bail.
