Police Shoot, Kill Grandson of Retired Police Chief

Police shot and killed the grandson of a retired police chief who fled from them after he refused to drop his loaded handgun outside a townhouse in Gary Monday morning.

Darnell Russell, 28, released from federal prison in August, was pronounced dead at the front door of a home in the 5500 block of E. 5th Ave., where patrolmen Anthony Boleware and Darrian Donald shot him during a frantic scuffle minutes before noon.

"It is most certainly justifiable," Chief Reggie Harris said Monday evening. Harris, who spoke to officers at the scene, said the dead man was armed and uncooperative, forcing officers to act aggressively to protect themselves.
