Detention Center Rehires Fired Counselors Accused of Abuse

Cook County's juvenile detention center has agreed to rehire five counselors who were fired for allegedly physically abusing residents, but says the five won't have any contact with children in their new jobs.

The five will pull down a total of $261,000 a year in salaries.

But because the five are no longer allowed to work with children, the detention center has to hire five new counselors to work with the 400 youths housed there.

The workers were accused of hitting, kicking, punching and slamming down youths at the center, but an arbitrator says the detention center's previous leadership bungled their firings by failing to present proper evidence.
