NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Cardinal Francis George on Friday chose to address his previous comments that have fueled the verbal brawl taking place in the media surrounding the University of Notre Dame's invitation to President Barack Obama to speak at the university's commencement ceremony and receive an honorary degree.
George said the statement he made that "Notre Dame does not understand what it means to be Catholic" was made as an answer to a question at a conference on human life last weekend, not for the wide public dissemination it's received.
"The Bishops don"t control the University of Notre Dame, but what one Catholic does affects all of us," George said Friday. "I have great respect for Mr. Obama and his office and we agree (on many issues), but it is a crime to kill a human being."
