A World War II vet traveling through his native Chicago en route to D-Day commemorations in Paris feared he would be stranded in the Midwest after watching as a cab drove away from his Chicago hotel - with his bags and passport in back -- on Sunday.

Carmen Miceli, an 87-year-old restaurateur who had left his South Side home at 17 to march across Europe with Patton's Army, then eventually moved to Los Angeles, needed those bags back -- or at least the passport -- in order to get to Europe for the weekend's events, according to the Chicago Breaking News Center.

On Thursday morning, with the help of U.S. Rep. Danny Davis' office, Miceli got a new passport.

He plans to go clothes shopping this afternoon.
