$8.5M Settlement in Firefighter's “Wrongful Death”

When Northbrook Assistant Fire Cheif Wayne Luecht was killed in an explosion at a north suburban shopping mall 10 years ago, he left behind a wife and two teenage sons.

On Wednesday, a wrongful death lawsuit filed by his estate, was settled for $8.5 million, the Northbrook Star reported.

Luecht was inspecting transformers in an electrical vault in the basement of the Neiman Marcus store in Northbrook Court after a power failure in the store.  An explosion in the vault caused a fire which left Luecht with burns over 92% of his body.

He died at Loyola University Medical Center's burn unit 10 days later.
