14-Year-Old Becomes 33rd CPS Fatality

Juan Casarez, 14, was playing basketball with some friends in the Back of the Yards neighborhood late Thursday night when shots rang out and he and another player fell to the ground.

Casarez was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital of Cook County a short time later, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

A recent transfer student at Richard Milburn Alternative High School, he is the 33rd Chicago Public School student to die in street violence since early September. 

The second teen survived the shooting and was in good condition at Stroger, suffering from a graze wound on Friday.
