A cantankerous veteran in decline, Urlacher fills the ‘face-of-the-franchise’ role in myriad ways. He’s mean and marketable, but probably beyond championship form.
The former Defensive Player of the Year has something to prove after injuries prevented him from suiting up for the 2009 season. The question is, Will he regain his form or suffer another setback?
Urlacher, a one-time Rookie of the Year, has been something of a hero to Chicago since 2000, when he stepped into the Middle Linebacker position once filled by Mike Singletary, Bronco Nagurski and Dick Butkus. But the city may be ready to embrace a new Bear if Urlacher and the defense don’t roar back to monstrous form.
