Is Kyle Orton headed back to the Bears?

The Chicago Tribune reports that the Bears are interested in the quarterback after the Denver Broncos released him on Tuesday.

The Denver Post reports that Orton's agent asked for his release after Jay Cutler was injured Sunday, and that Orton would like to play for the Bears.

Orton, who played for Chicago from 2005-2008, including filling in for Rex Grossman for several games in 2007 when the Bears reached the Super Bowl.

The Bears are seeking a veteran quarterback to back up Caleb Hanie, and Josh McNown -- who played for offensive coordinator Mike Martz for the Detroit Lions in 2006 -- is believed to be the leading candidate.

But that won't stop fans from clamoring for Orton, who was actually traded to the Broncos as part of the deal to acquire Cutler.

Orton started the season as the Broncos starter, but was supplanted by Tim Tebow.

If the Bears do have interest in Orton, he'd need to clear waivers -- plus pay the $2.5 million left on his contract, ESPN reported. Plus there's the fact that he doesn't have any experience in Martz's system, which is considered difficult to learn.

Radio host and NBC5 contributor Lawrence Holmes says several other teams may be interested in Orton's services, including Seattle, Indianapolis, Houston, Washington and Cleveland.

Veteran quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan, who also played for Martz in Detroit, is also listed as a potential target for the Bears.
