Word to Your Mama

Unique Mother's Day gift ideas

Of course you love dad, but we all know it's really mom who digs a nice brunch and a little bit more than a Hallmark card on her day of honor. So here's some ideas for some fun alternatives to basic flowers and breakfast in bed.

Work of Art: Why should the fridge be the only place to display little Jimmy's latest masterpiece? Turn any child's artwork into a personalized present for Mother's Day. Chicago-based website ForYourParty.com can produce custom Mother's Day Coaster Cards, complete with coordinating stardream envelopes. How is this done? Dad can simply submit their kid's drawings for mom via email to the art team at the Web site (sure beats the hassle of the store!). The coasters cost $100 for 50 cards (with coordinating envelopes).

The Queen's Court: The Palm Court at the historic Drake Hotel recently went through a face-lift (no, we are not suggesting you do the same for mom), and is offering some great promotions to launch the beautiful space and celebrate mom. Mother's Day tea ($30 adults, $16 kids 4-12) reservations start at noon this Sunday, complete with a shoulder and neck massage for mom, courtesy of Elizabeth Arden. She'll also get a certificate for a future visit, beauty tips and a hair consultation from C Salon, a copy of O Magazine, and a chance to win a handbag from local designer Christopher Augmon. Already have plans this Sunday? For the entire month, mom can eat free if she brings along three paying adults, proving that mom deserves more than just one special day. For reservations, call the Palm Court at 312.787.2200.

Double Whammy: You've been questioned before about who is the mother and who is the daughter, but both of you know that your girlish good looks sometimes come with a little help from the pros. Grab the woman responsible for your great genes and run to the Salon at ULTA by May 10th, and you'll both receive 25% off any spa and salon service you choose. Imposters need not apply, as you must bring in a fave pic of the both of you to prove your mother/daughter status. The Salon at ULTA is located at 114 S. State Street and appointments can be made by calling 312.279.5081.

Low-key Lady: Ditch the $90 buffet for an a la carte brunch menu at Sheffield's (3258 N. Sheffield Ave.), offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Selections include French Toast, Pancakes, Eggs Benedict, Pulled Pork Hash, fresh fruit and more. Two manicurists from local nail salon Paint will be on site offering $10 manicures starting at 11 a.m. All moms will also receive one complimentary mimosa and flower. Reservations can be made by calling 773.281.4989.
