Pat "Deep Dish" Bertoletti is on a roll. Just last month, the Chicago chef won a major NYC St. Patrick's Day corned beef eating contest. And now he can add an asparagus title to his resume.
Bertoletti outlasted the competition Saturday at the World Deep-Fried Asparagus-Eating Championship in Stockton, Calif.
Bertoletti ate 7.58 pounds of the green stuff in 10 minutes during the competition at the Stockton Asparagus Festival, outlasting his closest competitor by a mere three ounces.
Bertoletti beat his buddy Joey Chestnut, who had won the event four years in a row and holds the world record holder in the event after eating 8.6 pounds of asparagus last year.
Other big eaters in the competition included Eric "Badlands" Booker of Long Island and Erik "The Red" Denmark of Seattle.
Bertolleti appears to be branching out. He's a dessert specialist who holds nearly every record for pies, but is showing great promise in the other categories. He's also eaten 67 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes and 85 Krystal burgers in 8 minutes.
Bertoletti won $1,500, a trophy, bragging rights and, we imagine, one of the worst smelling bathrooms around for his big win.
