As Barack Obama made history on Tuesday night and Chicago erupted into cheers and tears – we have to admit that we did take a brief moment to check out what Michelle Obama was wearing. (And we’re not so sure about the waist thing goin’ on.)

But soon, women around the country may have similar red and black frocks hanging in their closets.

First Lady fashion has influenced the general public for decades. But, how much?  That’s just what the intelligent folks at the Chicago History Museum are talking about. The museum will host a very timely discussion called “The Politics of Fashion” on Thursday night.

Moderated by journalist Laura Washington, the event is a part of the museum’s In The K/Now series, which delves into modern societal issues.

From Jackie Kennedy’s pillbox hats to Michelle Obama’s elegant dresses, the panel will address how ethics and political shifts influence what we wear.

And since Michelle is a hometown gal, Chicago women have a head-start getting her style. After all, we are also home to the one and only Maria Pinto boutique.
